This day trip from Tangier to Tetouan is the short one in the north: in under an hour you reach a white medina listed by UNESCO, with craft souks, the old Jewish quarter and the new town built when Tetouan was the capital of the Spanish protectorate.

What the day looks like

Pick-up from your hotel in Tangier; in less than an hour you’re in Tetouan, at the foot of the Rif. You start in the new town, with its protectorate-era buildings, then head into the medina: white streets, souks where craftsmen are at work, the old Jewish quarter and corners that recall Andalusia.

After lunch, back to Tangier. If you prefer, you can stay longer for more free time in the medina.

How long is the drive from Tangier to Tetouan?

Less than an hour each way: about 60 km by road. That’s why the trip can be a long half day or a full day.

Why does Tetouan feel Spanish?

Tetouan was the capital of the Spanish protectorate in northern Morocco, and many buildings in the new town date from that time. The medina also has a strong Andalusian influence.

Which is better from Tangier, Tetouan or Asilah?

Tetouan, if you want a large, lively medina with craft souks. Asilah, if you prefer the sea, ramparts and a small, quiet town.

Is the day trip private or shared?
